Marriage about love not gender says AME
Marriage equality advocates have hailed senator Janet Rice and her wife, Penny Whetton, as role models for all married couples, saying the pair are living proof marriage is about love and commitment not gender.
Speaking on Radio National Rice said: “We’re very proud of our status as one of the very few same-sex couples in Australia who have been legally married here, and we really want other Australian same-sex couples to have the same opportunities as us.”
Rice and Whetton have been married for 28 years, eleven of which have been since Peter transitioned to Penny.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said, "Janet and Penny are an inspiration for marriage equality supporters because they are living proof that marriage is about love and commitment, not gender.”
Croome went on to describe Rice and Whetton as role models for all couples.
“Their marriage has endured the challenges it has faced and been strengthened by those challenges,” said Croome.
