Rainbow friendly law firm Dowson Turco will be holding a seminar in September outlining the issues relevant to the LGBTI community when it comes to family law.

Dowson Turco Director Nick Stewart said since the law changed in 2009 to recognise same-sex relationships, many members of the LGBTI community are unaware of their rights.

He said people should attend the seminar to find out about key issues regarding parenting, property, division of assets, life documents and wills.

The seminar will be given by gay and lesbian lawyers so you can expect a supportive environment.

Stewart stressed it was especially important for LGBTI people to get their affairs in order.

“Life is unpredictable and we see many members of the LGBTQI community have complex relationships and affairs but do not have essential life documents to manage things when life events happen.

“Often multiple parties are involved, children are sometimes involved, but also we are a prosperous community and a lot of us make decent coin and have significant interests in commercial businesses.

“It’s important to structure our personal and financial interests in a way that anticipates what might go wrong in the future. It’s much cheaper to do the work at the outset than to clean up the mess at the end.

As strong advocates of the LGBTI community, Dowson Turco have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the laws that regulate the lives and relationships of LGBTI people, Stewart said.

The free seminar will take place on Saturday, September 6 from 3pm-5pm at 572 King Street, Newtown.
