Geelong City Council has come out in favour of marriage equality. The council has voted to support efforts to achieve marriage equality and will write to federal MP Sarah Henderson urging her to vote for the reform.

Australian Marriage Equality deputy director, Ivan Hinton, said the council had shown great leadership in supporting equal rights for same-sex couples.

“Geelong's councillors have demonstrated that we can all play a part in showing the Federal government the strong community support for marriage equality,” Hinton said.

Last week Geelong Football Club came out in favour of marriage equality, posting its support on the GFC website. In doing so, Geelong became the first major AFL club to support the reform.

Hinton said "Now it’s time the federal member Sarah Henderson listened to her local council, her footy club and her constituents to back a reform that will strengthen families and help the local economy."

Marriage equality advocates will travel to Geelong and Colac this weekend to lobby Henderson to support reform on the issue. The visit will be the first of  50 planned trips to suburban and regional electorates around Australia to lobby for support.
