Breaking a seven-year winning streak, the Brisbane Hustlers’ have defeated the Sydney Convicts as reigning champions of the Purchas Cup.
The Purchas Cup wrapped up over the weekend on Brisbane's historic Ballymore Stadium fields with the Brisbane Hustlers unseating the Sydney Convicts for the first time in eight years. The Hustlers took out a resounding win against the Convicts beating the reigning champs, 12-5.
The Purchas Cup is named for Andrew Purchas - founder of the Sydney Convicts and the current president of the Bingham Cup 2014.
Purchas described the 2014 event as the largest Australian Gay Rugby Championship in the tournament’s 10 year history and said the level of talent displayed on field continued to grow.
“Huge congratulations to the Brisbane Hustlers in defeating the Sydney Convicts. They were definitely the best team in the tournament. This is the first time the Sydney Convicts have been defeated in this tournament. The quality, depth and standard of gay rugby in Australia continues to grow.
"It was also very encouraging to see the Melbourne Chargers give the Sydney Convicts a run for their money in the pool games. All the Australian gay rugby clubs are going to be very competitive at the Bingham Cup in August," said Purchas.
Martin Tebbutt, co-vice president of the Hustlers described the win as a great result for Brisbane Hustlers. “Our team worked so hard for the win, beating the Convicts and winning the Purchas Cup for the first time is a huge achievement.” Tebbutt told SX.
“It is great to chalk up that first win in such a big year with the Bingham Cup being held in Sydney in late August, and sends a message to all of the competing teams that we will be a force to be reckoned with,” said Tebbutt.
David Whittaker, President of the Sydney Convicts admits the team was disappointed to lose the Purchas Cup but excited by the strength and skill of the opposing teams.
“There has been a great improvement overall in the quality of gay and inclusive rugby in Australia. The Hustlers deserve full credit for reforming the club just two years ago and winning the Australian Cup of Gay Rugby.
“The Convicts will be working very hard over the next six months in the lead-up to the Bingham Cup in August to ensure we keep the Cup in Sydney! It will be very exciting to watch gay and inclusive rugby take yet another step up in quality and skill level at the event and will certainly be a great party!"
