MPs to front marriage forums
Politicians from all three major parties will be present at two community forums in Melbourne and Sydney this month as marriage equality advocates plan their next move in the wake of votes against reform in the federal and Tasmanian parliaments as well as victories for marriage equality in the recent US election.
The forums, to take place in Melbourne on Thursday, November 15 and in Sydney on November 25, will be co-hosted by Australian Marriage Equality (AME) and the Gay and Lesbian Rights lobbies in Victoria and NSW respectively.
MPs attending the Melbourne forum this week include Labor’s Victorian Shadow Attorney-General Martin Pakula, Liberal MP Clem Newton-Brown and Greens MP Sue Pennicuik.
MPs to attend the forum in Sydney later this month will include Labor MP Penny Sharpe, Greens MP Cate Faehrmann as well a representative from the Coalition.
Other speakers at the forum will also include leading marriage equality advocates such as PFLAG national spokesperson Shelley Argent, Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby co-convener Anna Brown, Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) co-convener Bryn Hutchinson and recently retired AME national convener and newly elected Sydney MP Alex Greenwich.
Brown said the forums will provide an important opportunity for community members to discuss the future of marriage equality and voice their opinions to parliamentarians.
“The Melbourne forum will be run as a panel discussion and is designed to be interactive with ample opportunity for questions from the audience,” she said.
Croome said he was hopeful the upcoming meetings will prove very useful for the next chapter in the fight for marriage reform.
“The marriage equality wins during the US election have focussed many people’s attention on the future of marriage equality in Australia so I urge everyone with an interest in the future of this reform to attend,” he said.
