Singer songwriter Missy Higgins has jumped on board to write the score for Melbourne Theatre Company’s new production, Cock.

The play, which has won rave reviews on the West End and an Olivier Award for its playwright Mike Bartlett, will have its Aussie premiere this month.

The plot for Cock revolves around a love triangle between two gay men and a woman. Director Leticia Caceres told the Herald she came across a Youtube of Higgins doing a cover of Gotye’s 'Hearts a Mess' and was prompted to approach her to write music for the show.

“It’s so full of angst and rage and pain and fury, done with just her voice and piano, that it rips you apart,” she told the Sun Herald.

“I thought she would connect emotionally to the heart of this piece and bring something really fresh to it. And she has. Her music is just beautiful.”

The Melbourne Theatre Company’s Cock plays at Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne, until March 22.
