Marriage Equality for Ireland in 2015?
Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Eamon Gilmore, has suggested a referendum on same-sex marriage will be held before the next election, making marriage equality a possibility in Ireland by 2015.
Gilmore made the comment to journalists whilst attending a Labour Youth Conference in Limerick on the weekend.
Gilmore’s pronouncement was not the first time the idea of a referendum on same-sex marriage has been pondered in Ireland. In April, the Constitutional Convention asked the Irish government to legislate for same-sex marriage and the government has until the end of October to set a date for a referendum.
Ireland introduced civil partnerships for same–sex couples in 2011.
