Lieutenant Colonel Cate McGregor counselled after Twitter tirade
High profile army transgender woman, Lt Col McGregor, has been counselled after sending abusive emails and tweets to a blogger who emailed criticism of her transgender status.
The blogger – a member of the army reserve – is said to have singled out McGregor for an attack criticising gay and transgender people in the military.
News.com.au reports that after a series of heated emails and tweets, McGregor was said to have criticised the reserve member’s father as a failure in the army and signed off her email as "Catherine McGregor AM - suck on that f#ckwit!”
In the barrage of hate mail that follwoed, McGregor had been categorised as a "walking talking parody of Australian womanhood".
The Defence Force confirmed a review of the online exchanges between Lt Colonel McGregor and the blogger had breached social media policy and McGregor was “formally counselled” for her part in the incident.
A Defence Force spokesperson said: "In addition, all Defence members involved were reminded of their obligations in relation to appropriate social media use, equity and diversity and acceptable standards of behaviour.''
News.com.au says McGregor was under no obligation to reveal the action taken against her as it was covered by privacy laws but chose to be open in the interest of transparency.
