Celebrities have helped raise over $35 million at the amfAR gala in Cannes in support of HIV research. Amongst the donors was pop singer Justin Bieber who donated $545,000 towards the cause.

Event organisers were reportedly astonished by Bieber’s generosity. News outlets are speculating Bieber may be trying to restore his image, which was recently tarnished by increasingly bad behaviour, including criminal charges being laid for illegal street racing.

The annual amfAR Gala is one of the most lavish events at the Cannes Film Festival. The auction at this year’s gala event broke records, with a Damien Hirst mammoth skeleton raising $15 million. It is the largest amount raised from a single auction in the history of the event. A trip into space with Leonardo Di Caprio on the Virgin Galactic also sold for 1 million.

As well as the auction, the Gala included performances from Lana Del Ray and Alan Thicke.
