Just days after Ellen Page came out as gay, it has been announced that Julianne Moore will star alongside the 26-year-old indie movie favourite, playing her lesbian lover in a new indie drama, Freeheld.

Freeheld sees Moore cast as Laurel Hester, a New Jersey detective who faces a battle to assign her pension to her partner Stacie Andree (Page) when she discovers she is terminally ill.

The movie is based on a true events which saw Hester take her fight to the courts as she battled the Ocean County Freehold for the right to have her pension paid out to Andree.

Hester and Andree’s battle has already been the subject of an award winning documentary by Cynthia Wade, which took out the Sundance Special Jury prize in 2007.
