Gay NBA star Jason Collins has expressed his disbelief at countries which crimininalise homosexuality in a United Nations video campaign entitled Free and Equal.

The campaign aims to promote equality for LGBTI people worldwide and has previously featured Stephen Fry, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis as well as Nelson Mandela.

Collins, who came out as gay last year, is the latest campaigner to lend his name to the initiative and has firmly stated his opinion on countries with anti-gay laws.

“In some countries it’s illegal to be gay, which is ridiculous and from my standpoint it’s absolutely insane to criminalise someone for being who they are with regards to sexual orientation or gender identity," Collins said.

“It’s on the same level for me as discriminating against someone because of race."
