Iran pop star Googoosh promotes LGBT rights in new single
Iran’s reigning Queen of Pop, Googoosh, has released a new video clip for her latest single, Behest (Heaven) featuring a lesbian couple whose relationship is the subject of family condemnation.
Googoosh is the first prominent artist in Iran to take a stand for LGBTI people, who are often subjected to immense homophobia in Iranian society.
Navid Akhavan, who wrote and directed the video for Googoosh, said although they knew the subject matter was controversial, reaction to the clip had been supportive.
"The reactions we have seen so far have been tremendous," he said. "The comments I have read online and the messages I have received from people within the Iranian LGBT community have brought tears to my eyes."
Not everyone has been positive in their response to the clip, several websites have denounced the singer for her positive message on homosexuality calling Googooosh an anti-revolutionary and suggesting her video was spreading decadence in Iranian society.
Iranians arrested for homosexuality face anything from a 100 lashes to the death penalty.
