IOC official slams US for sending gay people in official delegation
Mario Pescante, former VP of the International Olympics Committee (IOC) has slammed the US for including gay athletes in its official delegation to the Sochi Games.
Pescante has been reported as saying the US should not be promoting LGBTI rights whilst at the Olympics.
“It’s absurd that a country like that sends four lesbians to Russia just to demonstrate that in their country gay rights have [been established],’ he said. “The games should not be an occasion and a stage to promote rights that sports supports daily.”
Neither the President, Vice President nor the first lady will attend the Sochi Olympics. Instead the official US delegation includes three openly gay athletes – tennis champion Billie Jean King, hockey player Caitlin Cahow and figure skater Brian Boitano.
