Inner City Legal Centre and ACON launch Fair Play
The Inner City Legal Centre, ACON and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras have come together to produce a guide to help community members and partygoers understand their rights during the Mardi Gras season.
Replacing the existing resource, Project Blue, which was launched in 2009, the new guide was developed following extensive consultation with the community after the 2013 Mardi Gras season.
The aim of the guide is to ensure people understand their legal rights when attending or participating in activities during the 2014 Mardi Gras season, particularly in regards to health, safety and appropriate behaviour concerning police activities at events especially regarding your rights when drug dog operations are underway.
Fair Play will be available as an online resource at fair-play.org.au
Fair Play teams will be on site at major Mardi Gras events such as the party and Harbour party to provide info on rights and legal support and to monitor police operations.
Nic Parkhill, CEO of ACON, said of the initiative: “Fair Play provides ACON and our partner community organisations with an opportunity to educate the communities we serve on a number of issues, ranging from legal rights and responsibilities, through to safety and wellbeing.
“This is a community-led response that seeks to keep party-goers informed and safe over the Mardi Gras period. We are committed to supporting people in our communities to know their rights and to have the support, if needed, to hold police to account.”
Michael Rolik, CEO of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, said: Fair Play is an important part of Mardi Gras’ response to community concerns about policing at Mardi Gras events,
“Fair Play is designed to ensure members of our communities, as well as the thousands of visitors who come to Sydney for Mardi Gras each year, have the necessary information and support to ensure they have the best possible Mardi Gras experience.”
Fair Play is seeking volunteers for the 2014 Mardi Gras season.
Applications to volunteer close Friday 25th January 2014, and can be made via the Fair Play website at: www.fair-play.org.au
