Increasing acceptance for transgender models

CREATED ON // Monday, 17 March 2014 Author // Sabine Brix

Carol Marra is a 26- year-old transgender actress and model paving the way for like-minded individuals who are leaving behind the alternative modelling scene to seek out opportunities in Brazil's mainstream fashion industry.

Growing up, Brazilian born Marra never intended to be a model exclaiming, “it happened by accident.”

As a young child out with her parents, strangers would constantly comment to Marra’s mother “Wow, your daughter is beautiful,” to which she would reply, “that’s not my daughter, that’s my son.”

After struggling with her identity and using his car as a dressing room to change into women's clothing at the age of 18, Marra became depressed, hiding her true self.

“I am a lie to myself, I am a lie to my family. How long will I lie to satisfy others?” she questioned.

It was this depression that propelled her to make a change, taking steps to become a woman and to feel comfortable in her own skin.
