Honour Awards winners announced
The LGBTI community gathered in force on Thursday night to celebrate as the seventh annual Honour Awards recognising outstanding achievements within or contributions to NSW's LGBTI community played out against the glamorous surrounds of The Ivy.
Eight people and organisations came up trumps at the community event, which also serves as a fundraiser for LGBTI charity Aurora and ACON.
Playing host to the festivities was TV personality Andrew Mercado, who kept the mood light and the show running on time.
The community nominated awards drew 110 nominations across the six categories. Twenty seven finalists were chosen from the nominations' pool and the winners were announced alongside the honouree of the President’s Award, which went to Bill Bowtell AO for recognition of a lifetime of work improving the health and well being of people affected by HIV AIDS.
Other winners were:
Community Hero: William Yang for his photographic documentation of Sydney’s LGBTI community, and thirty years as a cultural ambassador.
Young Achiever Award: Katherine Hudson and Scott Williams for creating the Wear It Purple initiative to raise awareness about homophobic bullying and LGBTI youth suicide.
Media/Arts/Entertainment Award: Paul Capsis for outstanding contribution to the performing arts as an actor, singer and cabaret artist, and for many years of donating his time and talent for various LGBTI charity fundraisers.
Health and Wellbeing Award: Arab Council Australia for ground-breaking efforts to reduce homophobia in Arabic-speaking communities in NSW.
Community Organisation Award: NSW Gay and Lesbian Right Lobby for 25 years of leading the fight for LGBTI equality and social justice.
Business Award: House of Priscilla for 15 years of creating and supplying costumes for LGBTI community events such as Mardi Gras, DIVA and an infinite number of drag shows.
The event raised over $55,000 for community initiatives supported by ACON and Aurora.
ACON President Mark Orr congratulated the winners and all the finalists on their achievements and community service.
