Grindr users get a new term to show ‘Safe Sex Only’ preference

Grindr users have a new term to add to their profiles to indicate a preference for safe sex, thanks to a joint competition with the HIV Foundation Queensland.

A promo featuring the winning term ‘SSO' – safe sex only – will be premiered at the opening night of the Brisbane Queer Film Festival at the Powerhouse tonight.

Last month, HIV Foundation Queensland (HIVFQ) teamed up with the all-male dating app to find a term or saying Grindr members could display on their profiles to promote safe sex.

The new CEO of HIVFQ Tony Majer said the partnership with Grindr was an exciting milestone in the foundation’s bid to reduce HIV transmission in Queensland.

“I think the term chosen by Grindr members is really clever and a great step forward in the dating scene to show potential partners you are interested in safe sex,” Majer said.

Majer said the Foundation was determined to help drive the rates of new HIV infections down and education and prevention was paramount to achieving this.
