‘God Loves Gays’ billboard to be erected at Westboro Church’s hometown
The Westboro Baptist Church is getting a taste of its own medicine with the erection of a sign carrying a message they will definitely deem offensive: ‘God Loves Gays’.
The sign is a roadside billboard and will be installed in Topeka, Kansas, where the group is based.
It has been spearheaded by the people behind the popular Facebook page, ‘God’, paid for by a crowdfunding campaign.
At the time of writing, it has raised just over $40,000, just short of its goal of $50,000 – and there is still 51 days left.
“The Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group based in Topeka, Kansas. This group protests at the funerals of soldiers, murdered children, and more,” the supporting statement on crowdfunding website Indiegogo states.
“They carry around with them hate-speech signs that say that God hates gay people.
“This evil lie has been put into the world by bigots like them for thousands of years. The time has come to right this wrong.
“God LOVES gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people!
“BEHOLD! God is tired of having hate-speech put into his mouth by bigots. Therefore, the LORD shall put up a billboard in Topeka, Kansas that declares to all that “God Loves Gays’!”
The $50,000 will go towards paying a range of costs including a website, a new video, campaign rewards and, best of all, 12 months of billboard advertising.
Administrators of the ‘God’ Facebook page wrote that they have purchased billboard space in Topeka, which will go up on September 8.
