Germany’s Environment Minister comes out as lesbian
A long-time vocal supporter of LGBTI rights, Germany’s Environment Minister, Barbara Hendrick has come out as a lesbian in an interview with the Rheinische Post.
Hendrick’s sexuality was said to have been something of an ‘open secret’, but the 61-year-old officially put it on the record when she was asked by a Rheinische Post reporter what her plans were for the new year.
Hendricks revealed she would be celebrating with her partner life-partner in Berlin. The pair planned to take a bottle of champagne and a pair of glasses and toast the new year.
LGBTI rights advocates have praised Hendricks for coming out, suggesting the move shows young German LGBTI people they don't need to hide their sexuality to be successful in politics.
