Gay UK MP Nigel Evans resigns: faces sex charges
UK MP Nigel Evans has resigned as deputy speaker of the House of Commons. Evans is set to face charges from the Crown Prosecutor including sexual assault and rape.
The director of public prosecutions told BBC News there was now sufficient evidence to charge Evans, prompting the deputy speaker’s resignation.
Evans is being charged with eight offences alleged to have taken place between 2002 and 2013.
Following the announcement on BBC, Evans was arrested and questioned by police. Evans has denied all the charges. It has been revealed the incidents all involve men in their 20s. Allegations were first made against Evans in May of this year.
Since coming out in 2010, Evans has been a strong supporter of LGBTI rights.
