Gay Nigerians publicly whipped after gay sex conviction

LAST UPDATED // Friday, 07 March 2014 16:01 Written by // Cec Busby

News has surfaced that four young gay men have been convicted of gay sex in Nigeria and sentenced to a public whipping.

The punishment was handed out by an Islamic court in Bauchi, a city in Northern Nigeria.

The four men were said to be amongst dozens of Nigerians rounded up in January and arrested under the countries new laws criminalising homosexual sex.

The men were sentenced to 15 lashes each, plus a year’s imprisonment unless they come up with the money for a 20,000 naira fine ($150).

Dorothy Aken'Ova, of the Coalition for the Defence of Sexual Rights Network, told Pink News, the men could face further violence in prison unless human rights organisations assist by paying their fines.

The hearings in Bauchi city had been delayed from January, when a crowd tried to stone the accused men outside the court and demanded the judge pass the death sentence.
