Gay ally, Patrick Stewart mistakenly outed as gay by The Guardian

The Guardian has made a blunder in its coverage of actress Ellen Page’s coming out by mistakenly outing Shakespearean actor and Star Trek star Sir Patrick Stewart as gay. Stewart is straight and has been married to his partner singer Sunny Ozell since September 2013.

In a column in The Guardian, Jane Czyzselska  praised Stewart as a gay actor who had praised Page’s coming out speech.

Czyzselska wrote:

Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy because a high-profile and surprisingly politically aware young actress has decided not to play by the rules that so many closeted Hollywood actors are advised to follow if they are to enjoy mainstream success.

Unfortunately for Czyzselska, Stewart is not gay.

The Guardian quickly amended the article with a correction on Februaty 17.

“This article was amended on 17 February 2014,” editors wrote. “The third paragraph originally said ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’. This should have read ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy’.”

Fortunately Stewart has been amused by the mistake  even tweeting on the subject.
