Finnish minister waves rainbow flag at World Championships in Russia
Finland’s culture and sports minister showed his support for Russia’s LGBTI community by waving a rainbow flag at the World Athletic Championships last week.
Paavo Arhinmäki flew the flag whilst watching the women’s high jump final, which featured Sweden’s Emma Green-Tregaro, who also made a show of support for LGBTI rights by painting her nails in rainbow hues.
Green-Tragaro qualified for the final of the event but changed her polish to a flaming red "for love" after being advised she had broken the “code of conduct" of the games.
Meanwhile Arhinmäki told Finnish press he has raised the issue of Russia’s anti-gay laws with the Russian sports minister and suggested that LGBTI oppression is part of a wider human rights problem.
