After quitting Eastenders in 2007 when producers advised her character Sonia would be participating in a lesbian storyline, actress Natalie Cassidy will return to the popular UK soap. This time however she has no qualms about playing a lesbian.

Cassidy told BBC Breakfast she was naive for quitting back in 2007.
“When I was younger actually – I think it was a little bit naive, but when I was 21, 22, I was a bit like, ‘Oh Sonia wouldn’t do that, Sonia wouldn’t do that’.

“As an actress and as the character I thought, ‘Well actually, I’m not sure if Sonia would do this’.

Now however Cassidy has been asked back to Eastenders and showrunner Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed her chracter Sonia will be involved with a woman in the new storyline.

Previously Cassidy had said she felt sometimes soap operas ran storylines imply to be shocking. “One of the reasons I left was because of the lesbian storyline I had. I felt that it wasn’t right for Sonia.

“Sometimes in soaps people are so keen to get a shocking story that the character gets forgotten.”

Now however the actress feels the new storyline is appropriates, saying her character has ‘dabbled’ in the past.
