Drag queen Conchita Wurst of Austria wins 2014 Eurovision

Bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst of Austria has won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

The gender-bending performer took the Eurovision title in Copenhagen with the song ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’, garnering 290 points over runner-up the Netherlands with 238 points.

It caps a roller coaster journey for the drag star (real name: Tom Neuwirth), who attracted controversy with transphobic and homophobic petitions to have her removed from the contest.

“For me, my dream came true,” Wurst told reporters at her post-win press conference. “But for society it showed me that people want to move on, to look to the future.

“We said something, we made a statement.”
