Dr Mark’s Marching Academy to focus on LGBT rights in Russia for Mardi Gras float
Mardi Gras Parade regulars Dr Mark’s Marching Academy, have decided to put a political spin on this year’s float, lampooning Vladimir Putin and his anti-gay propaganda laws for their parade entry.
The ‘academy’ will field a 150-strong team for their entry, “Putin on the Ritz” which will focus on Russian president Vladimir Putin’s anti gay laws.
Since Putin enacted the law in June of 2013, Gay pride parades have been banned in Moscow and reports have suggested an increase in homophobic hate crimes.
This will be the “seventh or eighth” Mardi Gras parade group that Nick Hutchings has helped organise and choreograph for Dr Mark’s Marching Academy.
“We first started back in 1999, with a total re-enactment of The Sound of Music. I think the whole routine was 18 minutes long. We had 100 people, including some dressed up as nuns and people carrying mountains.”
This year’s effort is simpler - a four minute routine for the 150 marchers, broken up into two quick songs - but with a more pointed political message.
