DIVAs get a touch of Halloween in 2013
Organisers of the Drag Industry Variety Awards, or DIVAs, have announced the 2013 event will be held on October 28 at the Roundhouse at the University of New South Wales in Kensington.
It will be hosted by Sydney drag identity, Chelsea Bun, the 2009 inductee into the DIVA Hall of Fame.
With the event being held on the week of Halloween, organisers have given this year’s ceremony a darker and more gothic flavour, as evident in the event’s poster.
DIVA chair Greg Steele said the theme will give attendees and guests an opportunity to get creative with their outfits.
“When we booked DIVA 2013 we hadn’t realised it was the [week] of Halloween,” Steele told SX.
“So we thought it would be a great chance for punters to take their costuming for the event to a whole new level.”
Unveiled at the Midnight Shift on Monday night, the poster features Sydney drag legend Claire de Lune and rising drag performer, Marie Claire.
“The poster is a little bit fairytale, a little bit dark,” Steele said.
“It questions what we see when we look in the mirror and perhaps asks who is looking back. It’s saying, ‘This is who I am, regardless of who you see or what your perception is of me’.”
This year’s event will see the return to a roundtable function, with table seating for up to 12 guests.
“We like to mix it up,” Steele said. “We’ve done cocktail parties, we’ve now done a theatre, but this format is by far the most popular. People like to plan a table, catch up with friends and our interstate guest like it this way as it’s a great social occasion.”
Founded in 1991, the Drag Industry Variety Awards is an annual event that rewards, recognises and celebrates the achievements of Sydney’s drag community.
Tickets are $120 per person which includes canapés and continuous table service of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
“Join us for DIVA 2013 – it’s the best value ticket on the strip, all inclusive of canapés, wine, beer and soft drink, and amazing shows from Sydney’s amazing drag performers,” Steele said.
SX is a proud supporter of the 2013 DIVAs.
