The Disney Channel in the US made history on the weekend by introducing the first openly gay characters to appear on the children’s network.

The characters were a lesbian couple who dropped off their child for a play-date in the latest episode of hit kid’s show, Good Luck Charlie.

According to a synopsis on TV Guide, the storyline sees the show’s parents Amy and Bob Duncan (Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer) set up a play-date for their preschooler Charlie (Mia Talerico) and one of her new friends. When the friend arrives to play, the family discover Charlie’s new BFF has two mums.

Disney said the episode was developed to be “relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

On Million Moms has now threatened to boycott the show and the channel for its plans “to corrupt the children’s channel with LGBT content’.
