Daily Life’s annual list, naming the 20 women who have inspired and influenced Australian women throughout the year, has included LGBTI advocate and allies, Mehreen Faruqi and Tanya Plibersek as well as the Army’s highest ranking transgender officer, Lieutenant Colonel Cate McGregor.

The list, which takes its nominations from readers and is voted for by both readers and editorial staff, also named anpther Australian Defence Force officer, known only as ‘Kate’, as the Woman of the Year.

'Kate' is the woman at the centre of the Australian Defence Force Academy 'Skype scandal'.

One reader nominated Kate for tackling 'rape culture' head-on, saying "her extraordinary courage and determination make her an exceptional role model for women."

Cate McGregor came in at number 12 on the list. The high ranking army officer is best known for her speechwriting skills for Army Chief Lieutenant General Morrison. McGregor has survived numerous attempts to drive her out of the military since she came out as a transgender woman.
