Christine Forster engaged to partner
Tony Abbott’s sister, the openly gay City of Sydney councillor, Christine Forster, has announced her engagement to long term partner Virginia Edwards.
Forster told the Sydney Morning Herald she proposed to her partner whilst on a trip to Broken Hill, but confessed given the current laws, it may very well be a “long engagement”.
“It's a bit difficult, really, because we've decided we want to get married here in Sydney, hopefully under a federal marriage act but it might be under a NSW act. It's where our friends and family are. For us it's really important that we are married in our home and that our marriage is recognised in our home, which is here,” she told the Herald.
A cross party working group has drafted a same-sex marriage bill for NSW Parliament, but no date has been set for its introduction.
Today members of the ACT’s Legislative Council voted in favour of marriage equality. The move makes the ACT the first jurisdiction in Australia to offer same-sex couples marriage rights.
