Bruce Jenner says: I am a woman.
Bruce Jenner has spoken out about his transition, just minutes into an interview with 20/20 reporter Diane Sawyer.
Jenner told Sawyer “For all intents and purposes, I am a woman".
The former Olympic champion admitted he had felt like a female for most of his life but had trouble coming to terms with his gender identity as people had very definite impressions of him due to his athletic prowess. And despite the revelation he felt like a woman, Jenner requested that Sawyer still refer to him with male pronouns.
The reality show star said: “People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and soul, and what I do in life… it is a part of me – that female side is part of me.
“I was not genetically born that way. As of now I have all the male parts, and all that kind of stuff, and in a lot ways we’re different, but we still identify as female… And that’s very hard for Bruce Jenner to say, because I don’t want to disappoint people."
Jenner admitted coming out as trans was one of the most difficult moments of his life.
”You know what? It's going to be tough. I've been thinking about this day forever and what I should do with my life. How do I tell my story? How do I tell people what I've been through?” he asked.
The 65-year-old father of 10 said he remembered dressing in his mother’s and sisters' clothes whist still a small child, and described himself as a “lonely boy”.
Jenner revealed prior to meeting Kris Jenner he had begun hormone therapy with the intention of transitioning but after meeting Kris decided against going ahead with treatment.
All Jenner's children, his mother and sister expressed their support on the special. Kris Jenner failed to comment though later tweeted her support.
