Belle Brockhoff subjected to hate tweets at Sochi
Out Olympic snowboarder Belle Brockoff who failed to place at the Sochi Olympics has revealed to Fairfax media she received a number of hate tweets before competing in her event.
The 21-year-old said she’d received tweets hoping she’d break a leg or calling her an aggressive dyke.
“I've had hate tweets,” Brockoff said. Rather than take them to heart the snowboarder said she found them funny.
"I've had a lot of people tweeting me about different things," Brockhoff said. "I've had hate tweets. But it's good getting different sides of the story, and trying to open your eyes a lot more before you say anything.
"I've been called an aggressive something dyke or something, but I thought it was pretty funny. This one guy said, 'I'm right behind Putin, you should break a leg and get locked in the slammer'... The hate is funny."
Brockhoff made it to the semi-final of the Boardcross event but failed to place after the Canadian snowboarder Dominque Maltais went wide on her board, wiping the Australian player out of the race.
Brockhoff said she may continue to speak out about Russian’s human rights abuses, but will wait til after the Olympics to voice her opinion.
"Snowboarding before this was always my focus,” she told Fairfax Media. “This was just an extra thing. If I had more pressure from the LGBT community to speak out, then I would have to do well. I felt more pressure from that than whatever everyone else was putting on me from the sports side of it."
