Brazilian diver Ian Matos comes out

LAST UPDATED // Tuesday, 14 January 2014 09:44 Written by // Cec Busby

Inspired by Olympic diving champ Tom Daley’s recent admission he was dating a man, Brazilian Olympic hopeful Ian Matos has come out as gay.

Matos revealed the news in an interview with Portuguese-language newspaper Correio.

Matsos, who now lives in Rio de Janeiro, told the magazine, "From a young age, I knew I was gay, but it was here that I got to live my sexuality,"

Matos ignored advice from friends to stay in the closet until after the Olympics, telling the magazine the pressure to remain silent about his sexuality was becoming overwhelming.

Matos is currently the Brazilian 3-metre diving board champion. The 24-year-old athlete hopes his announcement will not impact on his potential sponsorships or success in the future.
