Watch: Bollywood actress promotes gay rights in new Youtube clip
Despite threats to her life, Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly has created a video to promote the UN’s Free and Equal campaign, which aims to raise awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and promote greater respect for the rights of LGBT people everywhere.
According to Jaitly the short film, titled The Welcome, aims to challenge intolerance and promote message of equality for India’s LGBTI people. Last year the 32-year-old former Miss India was nominated by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as a UN Equality Champion for her support of LGBTI rights.
Jaitly stars in the new short film which celebrates a Bollywood-style wedding between a gay couple. Jaitly says she hopes the clip will help spread a message of equality for LGBTI people and challenge intolerance.
Speaking at a press conference at the clip’s release, Jaitly said; “My message with this video is this: that changing of attitudes while fighting discrimination does not just begin with changing laws and policies, you also need to make a change of hearts and minds.
Jaitly says she is determined to continue her quest for LGBTI rights regardless of the personal cost.
“I have sustained this journey despite threats from many opposing parties, threats to my children, to myself and character assassination. It’s been a very, very long journey… I suffered a lot sometimes because there were people who would not want to work with me because I was supporting gay rights,” she said.
The Welcome has already received over 200,000 views on YouTube.
