Big Brother UK contestant blasted for homophobic remarks

LAST UPDATED // Tuesday, 07 January 2014 11:07 Written by // Cec Busby

Champion boxer, Evander Holyfield,  was blasted by the producers of Big Brother (UK) after delivering an on-screen rant where he likened homosexuality to a disability, suggesting it was abnormal and could be cured.

The conversation occurred between Holyfield and another housemate, Luisa Zissman. When Zissman asked Holyfield if there were any gay boxers, Holyfield replied that he was sure there were, but none were out, which prompted Zissman to say that was sad as “it’s good to be open because it’s normal”.

To which Holyfield replied, “That aint normal” thus beginning his rant on homosexuality as abnormal.

When Zissman tried to end the conversation, Holyfield continued on saying the Bible said homosexuality was wrong and suggested gay people should take a trip to the doctor for a cure.

Read the extent of Holyfield’s homophobia below:

Holyfield: The bible let’s you know, that’s wrong, that’s right.

Zissman: That’s just the way some people are.

Holyfield:  No, it don’t make no difference. If you were born and your leg were turned this way, what do you do, you go to the doctor and get it fixed back, right.

Zissman: It’s not about being fixed, it’s about… that’s just the way that you are.

Holyfield: No no no no no, you mean to tell me…

Zissman: I really don’t want to have this conversation.

Holyfield: I’m not mad, I’m just saying…

Zissman: You don’t understand, I don’t think it’s an appropriate conversation to have in this house, honestly.

Holyfield: All I’m trying to tell you, you know how handicapped people are born, you can’t say because they were born that way…

Zissman: You can’t compare someone that’s gay to someone that’s handicapped, it’s not a choice.

Holyfield: Yes it is a choice, come on, that ain’t the way nobody is made.

Zissman: I’m tired. I don’t think people have a choice in their sexuality, or they would be unhappy.

Holyfield: 'If you were born and you were turned this way - what would you do?  You go to the doctor and get it fixed back, right. All I’m trying to say, you know handicap people are born, you can’t say because they are born that way you can’t fix them.

Big Brother producers have reprimanded Holyfield for his comments but the boxer has refused to apologise.
