Bernardi tells Turnbull to stop advocating for marriage equality or quit the ministry
Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has told the ABC Malcolm Turnbull should resign over his comments advocating for same-sex marriage.
Bernardi – who was forced to resign from the Liberal shadow ministry last year over comments linking gay marriage to bestiality and polygamy – has called on Turnbull to stop publicly advocating for same-sex marriage, as it is against Coalition party policy.
"If Malcolm Turnbull wants to talk about fringe issues outside party policy, he should resign from the frontbench," Bernardi told the ABC.
"Our longstanding party position is that marriage is between a man and a woman. Our frontbenchers need to reflect that in any comments they make. When you are a frontbencher there is no room for a personal view."
It is not the first instance that Bernardi has clashed with Turnbull – he previously lambasted the Communications Minister when Turnbull was the leader of the Coalition over his support of Labor’s emissions trading scheme.
Earlier this week, Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek called on Malcolm Turnbull to sponsor a same-sex marriage bill in federal parliament, which prompted Turnbull to say he would upport a bill if a conscience vote was given.
