Steven Soderbergh’s bio pic on the life and loves of the camp Vegas pianist Liberace, has won the Golden Globe award for best TV movie or miniseries.

The HBO-funded film, which starred Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his young lover Scott Thorson, beat out some heavy competition including Aussie filmmaker Jane Campion’s miniseries, Top of the Lake and FX’s popular take on the horror genre, American Horror Story: Coven.

Over 2.4 million viewers tuned in to watch Behind the Candelabra when it aired on HBO last May,  making it the most-watched HBO film in nearly a decade.

The film’s star, Michael Douglas won an Emmy award last year for his performance as Liberace.
