Aussie athletes add their voice to Russia protest

LAST UPDATED // Monday, 03 February 2014 11:25 Written by // Cec Busby

Australian athletes Belle Brockhoff and Heath Spence have added their names to an online petition calling for Russia to end its homophobic treatment of gay people ahead of the Winter Olympics.

Brockhoff and Spence are amongst 50 past and present Olympians to add their names to the petition which has attracted over 400,000 signatures. The petition states:

We stand with citizens across Russia who are calling on their government to stop the crackdown against lesbian, gay, bi and trans people that is fuelling anti-gay violence."

The petition is a joint venture between LGBTI advocacy group All Out and Athlete Ally - an organisation tackling homophobia in sport.

Both groups have announced plans for protests to be held in Moscow, Sochi, London and other cities worldwide on February 5.

Last week Brockoff along with the members of the Aussie bobsleding team announced they had joined the Principle Six protest - Principle six in the Olympic Charter states that "any form of discrimination on the basis of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with the Olympic movement".
