AME advocate Ivan Hinton proposes to partner
“It’s about love and commitment,” says Australian Marriage Equality’s deputy director Ivan Hinton at a press conference shortly after the announcement that the ACT Legislative Council had approved the Marriage Equality Same-Sex Marriage Bill.
“It’s about the way in which Australian citizens have the freedom to express their love and affection to one another. And the way in which we establish our unions when we choose them to be life-long."
Hinton commented that from today there were going to be a number of couples proposing and they are going to be on bended knee.
Before adding, [but] “They’re not going to have a whole lot of microphones in front of them to make it awkward...”
He then surprised the assembled press and his long-time partner Chris Teoh by proposing:
“I love you with all my heart. I’ve only been able to say I am your husband in some countries. When we travel, we’re husbands – when we come home, we are not. Today is the first day that I can propose to you and say 'will you be with me for the rest of my life', and know that I can carry this intention all the way through... Will you marry me?”
Teoh's assent was drowned out by applause from the assembled media.
SX congratulates Hinton and Teoh on their engagement.
