Advocates welcome new ALP leader Bill Shorten
In an historic vote, party members and Caucus have decided upon the new leader of the Labor party, with Bill Shorten walking away with the top honour.
Marriage equality advocates have been heartened by the decision.
Shorten has previously pledged support for equal love as had defeated leadership candidate, Anthony Albanese.
Deputy director of Australian Marriage Equality, Ivan Hinton, commented:
"For the first time in Australian history both Labor Party Caucus and rank and file members were able to choose between two ardent supporters of marriage equality.
"We look forward to continuing our shared efforts in recognising the right of all Australians to marry the person they love in the country they love.
"We hope Bill Shorten will work in a multi-partisan way to progress marriage equality."
