Relax at Longview Vineyard

From the wine to the accommodation there is that special something at Longview Vineyard that makes you feel at home, says Alex Dunkin.

Upon arriving at Longview we sit down for our first glass of their wine and immediately the serenity sets in. The Queenie pinot grigio the drop of choice this year has a dry and tangy flavour, but it is the names of the wines that highlight how the idea of family is an inspiration at Longview and is found in every experience at the Vineyard. (The name Queenie was the Anglicized name given to the owners’ grandmother who migrated from Italy.)

We took our seat in a quiet section on the porch with a view of the vineyard rolling out before us. There was a gentle hum of conversation coming from the larger crowds inside the barn where the room and bars are designed with a rustic farm feel. Just over the railing the greenery begins with a front lawn which rolls gently down to a small lake. Beyond, the seemingly endless vineyards sprawl across the hillside. It soon becomes clear we have entered the slow lane and have escaped to tranquillity for the night.

Before we are able to take in the entirety of the view our first plate is delivered to the table to nibble on while we return to indulging in the relaxing surrounds. For a relatively low $45 a set menu of four courses is available for Sunday Tapas beginning with a simple yet delicious plate of toasted focaccia, prosciutto and seasonal vegies which leads into plates with char grilled quail, smoky frittata, tea smoked salmon and seared rare beef fillet The real pleasure of the Queenie wine comes to life with the food, bringing out more of its crispness.

By late afternoon, tapas complete we explored more of the property’s charm. We take delight in feeling pleasantly sluggish from the food as we take a short and peaceful stroll past the large gardens and homesteads to discover we are surrounded by nothing but vines, gardens and native wildlife.

Toward the end of our wander we spot our accommodation for the night just beyond the cellar door. The modern and intimate apartments are nestled on the hill with large windows facing out over the homestead and off into the giant gums. There are six apartments and also a homestead available for bookings. From inside our room we take in a fantastic view of the Vineyard. The front wall is made completely of windows allowing plenty of light in but also providing a peaceful sight. The positioning of the apartments also mean we can snuggle into the spacious king-size bed and look out to the world without others looking in. Everything you need for an overnight stay is available in the apartment: kitchenette, breakfast supplies and a spacious shower and bathroom.

The friendly staff and quiet location make Longview Vineyard a peaceful and charming escape.
