Sydney pop artists Corpus Rex pop up at Bear Bar
Up-and-coming Sydney-based creative arts duo Corpus Rex are hosting their first solo art exhibition at Sydney’s Bear Bar during Mardi Gras.
With a focus on the geeky bear, the opening of the Corpus Rex Gallery will be the first event at the pop-up bar on Friday, February 24, with artworks on display throughout the nine days of the bar’s Mardi Gras run.
Formed in 2008 Corpus Rex is the brainchild of gay couple Chris Alan and Rob Gonzalez.
“Almost everything we do is collaborative, we will ask each other’s opinions on our work as it progresses and more often than not do mock ups and set up shoots together before finishing or even starting a piece,” Chris told SX.
“We help inspire each other creatively which ultimately has strengthened our personal relationship. We also have a way of communicating with each other that comes from our mutual respect and support of how we each think. We are very different people, but that’s why we work so well together creatively and personally,” he added.
The pair say their work reflect all the things they love.
“There are pop-culture references as well as our own take on some more classic images and of course a few bear bums,” Chris added.
Rob says the work on display at Bear Bar will be “very graphic and it doesn’t take itself too seriously”.
“It reflects our inspiration from lots of different sources: from movies and comic books to fashion designers and classical artists.
“We are really looking forward to providing an entire gallery of work for Bear Bar and are excited and eager to see what people have to say.”
