Bear Essentials 21

The Harbour City Bears – Sydney’s popular community group for bears, their friends and admirers – celebrate the Mardi Gras season each year with their own curated festival, Bear Essentials. There are a host of diverse events in the program with something for everyone! Bears from all over Australia and the world come together each year at Bear Essentials – be sure you join in the fun and be part of the action. Fair Day

Join thousands of revellers at one of the highlights of Mardi Gras. Cruise the community stalls, the food stalls, the bars and, of course, the bears. Buy a raffle ticket from the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, hang out with the Harbour City Bears and grapple a hot guy in lycra at the Sydney Silverbacks wrestling club stall. Bear City 3 and Mardi Gras Film Festival

Queer Screen has teamed up with the Harbour City Bears to present a special treat at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival – the screening of the final instalment of the Bear City trilogy. Plus there’s a special meet and greet with some of the cast and crew of this popular comedy beforehand in the Festival Bar. It’s just one of many film and events in the festival, make sure you check out the full program of inspiring movies showing this year. Bear City 3 screens Saturday, February 25, 9.30pm with the Meet and Greet with the Bear City 3 cast from 7.30pm at the Festival Bar at Event Cinemas George. Details here


Bear Essentials 21 Opening 

This year’s Bear Essentials comes of age as it celebrates its 21st year. Join the Harbour City Bears and friend at the official launch at Kinselas. There’ll be DJs and surprise guests, as well as entertainment throughout the night. The opener is always a packed and rambunctious affair, setting the tone for the HCB’s week-long festival. Bear Bar

The pop-up bar for bears and their friends returns for Mardi Gras with a packed entertainment line-up. Organised by the guys behind the popular dance party Honey, the bar will run for nine days. Included in this year’s line-up is a wine tasting event hosted by United Cellars, a special appearance by US queer rapper Rica Shay and the return of our Search for a Cover Cub competition. Corpus Rex Gallery

Up and coming Sydney based creative arts duo Corpus Rex are hosting their first solo art exhibition at Sydney’s Bear Bar during Mardi Gras. With a focus on the geeky bear, opening night is February 24 but these cool artworks will be on display throughout the nine days of the bar’s Mardi Gras pop-up. Spread over two levels and with music from some of the best DJs on the bear scene; expect a hot and steamy night on and off the dance floor. Beach Bears

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to great beaches – Sydney has more than its fair share. The hotspots popular with the bears include clothing optional Little Congwong on Botany Bay as well as Lady Jane and Obelisk on Sydney Harbour. Or you can join the Harbour City Bears at their recovery outing on Bondi Beach on Thursday, March 2 (details here). Take some water, slip, slop, slap, and have a great time! 


SX Search for a Cover Cub

Join our host, comedian Dean Arcuri from Melbourne as we search for our very own Cover Cub. Do you have what it takes to be on the cover of SX? Wet Furr Pool Party

This splash around run by Harbour City Bears and part of Bear Essentials attracts hundreds of bears and cubs in togs and boardies. Ride the wave machine, play with a giant inflatable and grab a sausage from the BBQ, plus tunes from DJ Jimmy Dee in the courtyard. Kick on afterwards at the massive 3 Floors of Fur party at Kinselas. Popular with younger bears and cubs, Melbourne's best techno homo party returns to Sydney. Hosted by the guys behind hugely popular Instagram account The Bearded Homo, join the up-for-it party crowd for a raunchy night in the heart of Kings Cross. Mardi Gras Parade

Celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion at the world’s biggest gay pride march! There are over 170 floats in this year’s parade, making it one of the biggest processions in Mardi Gras’ 39-year history. Of course, look out for the Harbour City Bears, whose annual float is always a hit with crowds! Happy Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras Party

People descend on Sydney from all over the world for Mardi Gras so don’t miss out on the amazing Mardi Gras Party, following the parade. This party is huge with 12,000 partygoers, local and international DJs and spectacular stage shows. Bear favourite DJ Corey Craig from New York is headlining; and don’t forget to check out the party bears dancing in the infamous Bear Corner in the RHI. This new men-only late night party takes over the recently re-opened Flinders Hotel. Featuring some of the bears favourite DJs including Sydney’s Colin Gaff and US-based Matt Effect, this will be the perfect climax to your Mardi Gras celebrations.
