Viennese Special: Peter Rauhofer Returns
SYDNEY: Stalwart DJ Peter Rauhofer is all set to play the official Mardi Gras after event, Homesexual: Arabian Nights.
There are few DJs in the industry with the experience and achievements of Peter Rauhofer. First trying his hand on the mixing decks in his home town of Vienna during the early 80s, Peter was a pioneer in the development of Europe’s underground dance scene.
Three decades later and Peter says that dance music is at a pivotal point in its evolution.
“I am excited that dance has made such a huge resurgence globally. It’s reminiscent of the disco era when dance music was pop music,” Peter tells SX.
“People like Skrillex are nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys and David Guetta is selling out huge stadiums. It's a very exciting time for dance music.”
He explains that his own musical direction has recently started to come full circle.
“Not to sound narcissistic but lately I've been listening to a lot of my old stuff. I like to do this periodically and reference what I've already done so I can figure out what new directions I can go in and what new approaches I can take to my remixing,” Peter says.
In town to play at the official Mardi Gras After Event, Homesexual Arabian Nights, Peter says he is “honoured” to be a part of the Mardi Gras line-up.
“Mardi Gras in Sydney is one of the biggest and most historical parties in the world,” Peter says.
“This year will be different because music and fashion change every year and from what I've heard the crowd will be bigger than any year in the past.”
Playing alongside international DJ superstar Tony Moran as well as other local acts including Jason Forbes, Kitty Glitter, Alex Taylor and Harry K, Peter explains that punters should expect “exactly what they came for – a good time”.
“I like to play for my crowd and feed off their vibe so they usually leave very happy,” he says.
“Gay crowds want the best! Gays were always the tastemakers in the music industry.”
Peter Rauhofer plays Homesexual: Arabian Nights on Sunday, March 4 at Home The Venue, Cockle Bay Whard, Darling Harbour. Tickets from www.inthedark.com.au
