Qld's Dykes on Bikes explore new territory
With a strong following in Brisbane, Dykes On Bikes Queensland is starting to look north. Queensland Pride hears from Julz Raven - the current president of the group.
Dykes On Bikes® was originally founded in San Francisco in 1976 and is now one of the world’s most recognised GLBT brands. The Queensland chapter was set up in the early 90s and has remained strong over the years.
Originally a place for only the hardest women of our community to meet and enjoy the sport of motorcycles, over the years this hard edge has softened slightly and expanded as motorcycling has become more mainstream and women have taken more of an interest in the sport.
Our members are from all walks of life, from teachers to lawyers, doctors to the unemployed.
Everyone has a space here so long as you arrive on two wheels, you are female and you’re a lesbian.
Firstly we aim to support our members and create a safe environment for them to enjoy motorcycling. We breed strong women at this club but we are mindful that this club is both locally and globally iconic and with that comes a big responsibility to be both respectful of that support and to give back to our communities.
We recently committed to formally supporting a charity every year and this year Open Doors Youth Service is the one we are happy to associate with. Throughout the year we do a few fundraising events to support them and all money raised goes to support the kids who find themselves needing help from that group.
This year we have calendars for sale and all the money raised will be going to this charity to help them in the future. These can be purchased via ebay or by contacting us directly.
We are slowly growing in numbers in Queensland (mainly the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast areas) but we now want to include riders from all over our amazing state and get more lesbians riding with us.
In the near future there will be a motorcycle tour up through the state with rides along the way so riders from Maryborough, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns can join us and share in our club’s events. All of you from up that way should keep an eye out and get involved and we will be in touch via Facebook soon in relation to this.
As for the immediate future of Dykes On Bikes Queensland, we have Mardi Gras 2015 to look forward to, some great camping trips over the next year, Christmas parties and dinners, monthly rides and of course supporting and proudly leading all our local Gay Day events and Pride events to support our community.
We welcome new members, so if you’re a positive lesbian who wants to ride we would love to have you come along.
