Gay Bikers: Riders Wanted

Categories // Feature | South Australia

David Wright & David Cauchi are organisers of the LGBTI social group Adelaide Bike Tourers. Here they tell us about how the group works and the joys of hitting the road.

Its been a while since Adelaide had a motor bike group for our community. There are plenty of people out there who, like me, enjoy the sport, activity of riding a motorbike. There truly is a sense of freedom riding a motorbike. Adelaide has the nearby Mt Lofty Ranges (AKA Adelaide Hills) with lots of roads with curves and small towns that sell good food and coffee. Many of you riders have your own special rides, like the Gorge Road, or the Bull Creek ride to Goolwa. Come and share those rides.

Why the group? There are plenty of existing biker groups, however they tend to be conservative and very hetro in orientation. So if you and your same sex partner want to come for a ride with a group of other people interested in riding, then you know you’re welcome and can be yourselves. It’s also about having a sense of presence in that we do what we do, because we enjoy our bikes and the ride, regardless of our sexuality. The group has the potential to make new friends who have the common interest in bikes.

On Sunday February 3, we had our first group ride. We toured the back roads of the Barossa Valley. Steady, relaxed and time for coffee and chats. A mixed bag of bikes, Tourer, Adventure and Sports bikes....we would be happy if you ride a cruiser, or large capacity scooter. When we ride as a group, it’s not a race, it’s about the journey, and sharing the experience with others who understand the joy of riding and connecting with the environment.

Adelaide Bike Tourers is a SOCIAL GROUP for Riders. If you have a current Bike Licence, a road worthy bike/scooter, then come and join the group. The rides are held on the last Sunday of each month. We meet at the forecourt of the Caltex Petrol Station on O'Connell St North Adelaide. We meet up at 9:00am and leave by 9:30am. The rides are day rides and it allows you plenty of time to get home and chill. Remember you take the responsibility to ride to your level of competence. Go and check us out on Face Book. Look up Adelaide Bike Tourers, hit the Like button and join the group. You can keep informed. Our next ride is Sunday, 24th February 24, see you there!

    Hey Guys,

I noticed the write up about the Bike Tourers in Blaze 313 and wanted to leave a comment. I'm the manager of the Royal Oak Hotel (next to the Caltex where you meet) and would like to suggest Breaky here at the Oak. We offer everything from small continental breakys to big full breakfasts. We would love to have you all in for breakfast before your meets (And lord knows you don't want to ride on an empty stomach!)

If anyone would like to discuss more or make a booking, please don't hesitate to call us on 8267 2488.

Look forward to hearing from you!

    Matt Thomas
    Assistant Manager
    Royal Oak Hotel
