All You Need is Love: Sydney Pride Festival 2014

CREATED ON // Monday, 09 June 2014 Author // Cec Busby

Celebrate the community and help LGBTI charities at the 2014 Sydney Pride Festival.

The aptly-named Stonewall Hotel has been holding annual Pride celebrations ever since the venue first opened its doors almost twenty years ago. But in more recent times, the hotel has spearheaded a grassroots event – Sydney Pride Festival – that honours unsung heroes who fought for our LGBTI rights in years gone by.

Sydney Pride Festival coordinator Glenn Hansen said Pride week has historically played an important role in Stonewall Hotel’s event calendar, but in the past five years festivities have evolved to include the whole community.

“Certainly we still celebrate where Mardi Gras comes from, in the month that the first Pride marches occurred, but the difference now is more people are willing to get involved and there is a real diversity in the events.”

For Glenn, the annual festival also provides the perfect opportunity for the venue to raise some much needed funds for disadvantaged LGBTI people. Most events on the Pride Festival calendar feature entry by gold coin donation.

“It’s all about raising money for charity and putting the charities to the forefront,” Glenn explained.  “Lots of the LGBTI community charities will benefit.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘All You Need Is Love’. Glenn said it evolved out of the happenings in Russia that spurred a worldwide campaign for LGBTI rights featuring the same slogan. He said it also encompasses the notion the LGBTI community needs to work together, especially in light of recent statistics that highlighted the alarming rates of suicide among sexuality and gender diverse people.

“We really wanted to reach out and focus on the fact we do need love in the community,” said Glenn. “We need to respect each other and help each other and also remember to ask for help if we need it.”
