Your Island Home: Cockatoo Island Party

Kick start your Mardi Gras weekend at Sydney’s iconic Cockatoo Island as it hosts its first-ever gay and lesbian soiree.

Sydney’s Cockatoo Island will be lit up with rainbow costumes and a sparkling pink sunset this Mardi Gras season. For the first time, the iconic Sydney location will be used for a gay party with event and production behemoth InTheDark taking on Friday, March 2. As one of the many new day-into-night events in the Mardi Gras calendar this year, the party will feature a range funky tunes from leading local DJs Kitty Glitter, Harry K, Gay-Z and DJ Booth.

InTheDark director Stephen Craddock says the party, which he says “will be one for the history books”, is a perfect way to kick-start the Mardi Gras festivities.

“The inspiration for this party really came from Sydney Harbour and the fact that it hasn’t really been used before for gay events,” Stephen tells SX.

“We are expecting the vibe to be relaxed with the most glamorous Sydneysiders and local and international visitors in attendance. It will have a party feel as everyone gears up for the weekend.”

With some of the best local DJs lined up for the event, Stephen explains while it will definitely have a relaxed ‘cocktails and conversations’ vibe, there will also be disco tunes to get bodies moving.

“Musically you can expect to hear everything from your favourite RnB divas to the best camp classics from Kitty Glitter,” he says. “We will also have enough drag queens to make sure that the harbour will be sparkling pink as the sun sets.”

As one of the headline acts, up and coming local DJ Gay-Z says he can’t wait to take the stage at the picturesque venue.

“I want to make sure that the music I play will match the amazing location of a party held in the middle of Sydney Harbour,” Gay-Z tells SX.

“Cockatoo Island is unique in that sense as there has never been such an event on the island. Sydney is blessed with an amazing harbour, but has been under-utilised for gay events.”

Ever since playing his breakthrough sets at gay RnB night Swagger, Gay-Z has been making a name for himself on the gay scene Australia-wide.

“Swagger has now taken me to Melbourne and Brisbane and it’s been exciting and interesting to play at the same party, but to very different crowds,” he says.

“I think anyone going out to party want to do one thing and that is dance and have a good time.”

And there’s no better time than during the Mardi Gras season at Cockatoo Island.

“Mardi Gras for me is a celebration of the gay community in Sydney and Australia,” he says. “That includes a celebration of the culture and the community’s contribution to life in Australia.”

Cockatoo Island Party is on Friday, March 2, 2pm-9pm, The Island Bar, Cockatoo Island. Tix $40 from or at Soleil Tanning, Oxford Street.
