Actor Gavin Roach, the man behind the festival hit Confessions of a Grindr Addict, is back with a riveting double bill as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival, writes Mathew Galea.
The creator, writer and performer who brought us Confessions of a Grindr Addict returns to the Sydney Fringe Festival with a riveting new double bill: Who Do You See? and Any Womb Will Do.
Who Do You See? is a bold and innovative new piece that takes five characters literally into the unknown. Inspired by the Braille children’s picture book, The Black Book of Colours, written by Menena Cottin and illustrated by Rosana Faria, the actors perform the play in darkness, with minimal costumes and sets, forcing the audience to utilise their imagination.
“Who Do You See? creates an open door for discussion and pushes the audience to reach out to the characters individually,” Roach tells SX.
He adds that “sound, voices and sound effects” play crucial parts in the play in “attempting to trigger memory and emotion into the audience”.
Roach hopes that the play, with its unconventional approach, will allow audiences “to continue conversation with their friends after the performance is long finished”.
The second part, Any Womb Will Do explores the metaphorical ticking biological clock of Felix (the loveable rascal from Confessions of a Grindr Addict) who desperately wants a baby but isn’t entirely sure on how to get one.
He embarks on a search for answers to one of his enduring dilemmas – how can a single gay man have a child?
Any Womb Will Do features a slightly more grown-up version of Felix that fans and audiences alike will find extremely entertaining.
Having developed Felix, it won’t be last time we’ll see him on stage. Any Womb Will Do is the second instalment in what Roach envisions as a trilogy.
As Roach says, Felix is his “bread and butter”.
Who Do You See? and Any Womb Will Do, part of the Sydney Fringe Festival, runs from September 8-23, at King Street Theatre, Newtown. Tix $15 from 2013.sydneyfringe.com.
