Olivia Newton John songs to feature in new Aussie musical
A new musical, Hopelessly Devoted, is set to do for Olivia Newton John what Mamma Mia did for ABBA, reinvigorating the former Queen of Pop’s tunes and reworking them for a new generation.
The musical by Elise Greig will premiere at Glen Street Theatre in August and features 15 hit songs from Newton John’s back catalogue, including, 'You’re the One That I Want', 'Xanadu', 'Physical', 'Magic', 'I Honestly Love You', 'Sam', 'Let Me Be There', 'Banks Of The Ohio', 'If You Love Me Let Me Know', 'If Not For You' and of course 'Hopelessly Devoted To You'.
The plot revolves around a middle-aged brother and sister, Amy and Andy, who are stuck living together at their family home in regional Australia, caring for their chronically ill mother.
To escape this mundane existence, Amy creates a fantasy world in her lounge room that revolves around her idol, Olivia Newton-John. In between working two jobs to pay for the medical bills, Andy indulges his sister’s devotion. He knows that if it weren’t for Olivia, they’d both be going mad.
But what happens when Andy decides it’s time to move on from their fantasy land?
Hopelessly Devoted plays at Glen Street Theatre from August 26-31.
Performance Times: Tuesday 6.30pm, Wednesday 11am, Wednesday - Saturday 8pm, Saturday 2pm and Sunday 5pm. Tix $30/70.
